The last time I remember my experience with an appellate lawyer is my time at a prosecutor’s office, and they were on the quietest floor because everyone was writing and thinking. Whereas on the trial floor, we were running around meeting deadlines and talking to witnesses and gathering facts. So the appellate practice was always a bit of a mystery to me because I always wondered what was going on in their minds. That is why it was such a privilege to speak with MC Sungaila, the chair of the appellate practice in a large west coast firm Buchalter. She talks about her path becoming an excellent appellate lawyer, how she finds creative ways to continue improving her practice, and how she manages her team so that they are keeping the collective spirit to win and shape the course of the law in question. We are all thinking and writing in some capacity, so everything that MC had to share elevated my sense of purpose in doing just that in my life.
