The phrase “compassionate lawyering” may sound a little jarring because, I mean, compassion? Doesn’t that mean that we are being weak? You can’t win your cases by being compassionate to opposing counsel, right? But that is not what we mean. We are talking about exercising compassion toward ourselves. The perfectionism and the people pleasing - understanding how we are letting those tendencies infiltrate our lives and how we can exercise compassion to ourselves first and foremost so that we are leading others to do the same and create change for ourselves, our colleagues, our clients, and our whole legal community.
